Choosing the rice, designing the fermentation,
imagining the flavors—brewing, to us,
is an act of creation.

That's why we've never seen art and
makgeolli as separate worlds.

In 2023, we presented The Rough Waves of
Desire in collaboration with Busan-based
artist Bang Jeong-a. The project was developed
alongside the artist's solo exhibition at the invitation of Shop Makers.

But it was never about simply placing artwork
on a label. We first encountered the work itself,
and from there, we wanted to reinterpret it
through the language of makgeolli.

The "desire" at the heart of the artwork
became a bold 12% ABV, while its restless waves
were translated into the rich, textured body of takju.
The painting's vivid colors found their expression
in the bright aromas of yuzu and spearmint.

Fresh citrus notes and vibrant acidity from the yuzu
unfold alongside the cool herbal character of spearmint,
flowing across the palate like rolling waves.
A dry finish and a gentle, bittersweet edge complete the makgeolli.

What we created wasn't a makgeolli
to explain the artwork—
it was a makgeolli born from it.

At first, we planned to produce just 100 bottles.
It began as a small project alongside
the artist's solo exhibition, but it was embraced
far beyond what we had imagined.

What was meant to be a limited edition gradually
found a loyal following. Today, The Rough Waves of
Desire has become one of GGULGGEOK HOUSE's signature makgeolli.

Looking back, The Rough Waves of Desire
was less a product than a direction.

It became the starting point for a series of collaborations—
creating makgeolli with artists and introducing
Korean rice wine through exhibitions
in ways that felt both natural and meaningful.

For us, The Rough Waves of Desire was
the first project to reveal that art and
brewing could speak the same language.
